What happens if a courtesan falls in love? Lea de Lonval (played by Michelle Pfeiffer)is coming to a certain age (i have to admit it's really fitting to her)and she has a new lover, the young and sweet Chéri, the son of her friend. The relation starts like most of the relationships, but it turns out to be more with time. But Chéri has to make an arranged marriage and Lea stays all alone. She is longing after the boy and the boy is longing after his one real love. I guess its obvious that hearts will break here...
